FaunaThe fauna of Lefkadas “Divari”.
The 2 lagoons of Lefkada - Divari or Ivaria, according to locals – form unique wildlife sanctuaries, especially from Winter to Spring which are full of life, because of immigrant birds. The birds find a safe shelter inside the rushes covering inch by inch the ground around and inside the lagoons.
Except from the gulls (Larus argentatus, Larus larus), which find a permanent shelter all year around, at the beginning of autumn, Loufas or Falarides (Fulica atra) arrive, Kormoranos (Phalacrocorax carbo), Herons or Tsikniades (Egretta garzetta), Swans (Cygnus Cygnus), Prasinokefalopapies (Anas platyrhynchos), Kalamokanades (Hi-mantopus hamantopus) and many other small birds and fowls.
The Loufes of Falarides are the largest population together with Prasinokefalopapies.
Kormaranos, sit over the stones of the old road inside the small Divari and when the sun goes down, with an arrow shaping, fly away to spend the night in the island of Sesoula.
Herons are the most beautiful birds of Divari. In the winter time, since it is very difficult to find food, they ‘hang around” over “ katikia” of Divari, awaiting to grab a fish.
Some time, especially in the heavy winter time, the Swans, visit Lefkada, offering excitement and joy in the island.
We can describe, as a special case, the Kalamonades, big birds with threatening moods.
The gulls are permanent inhabitants of the island.
In the fauna of the highlands, you can also meet: Hares, Foxes, Ferrets, Weesels, Partridges, Blackbirds, Thrushes, Sparrow Hawks, woodcocks, Crows, Carrions Crowns, Wild pigeons, Kalogiannos, Hoopoe, Larks, Greenfinches, Gold finches, Owls, Magpies, Sparrows, Swallows, Orioles, Wagtails etc.
