During the summer months the Ionian Sea, is “cooled” by thermal winds (mistral). The winds together with the morphology of the area offer great statistics of wind and allow surfers to “take off” with new tricks and manoeuvres.
From midday on, both in Vassiliki and Agios Ioannis beaches, thermal winds increase steadily until late afternoon.
In Vassiliki the phenomenon is impressive. During mornings the closed bay area is ideal for beginners, since there are no waves and the water is quite shallow. After midday, the direction of the wind (Eric) changes and the sea becomes rough, giving the all clear for a wave fight. The wind statistics of this beach are impressive: May - 15 days of wind, June - 20, July - 25, August - 20, September - 15. Wind speed ranges from 4 to 7 and even 8 bft in good days. Vassiliki is an ideal surf place for slalom and freestyle of side shore conditions. There you will find many windsurfing schools and specialised shops.
Agios Ioannis beach, on the north side of the island, near Lefkada’s town, enjoys similar wind statistics offering different conditions water. Wave lovers will adore this beach. The waves are amazing for those who seek great excitement. We would also like to note that surf is an ideal sport for winter time.
