CULTURAL FESTIVALS
MUNICIPALITY OF LEFKADA
Lefkada had been the first to present the institution of “Festivals of Speech and Art” (1955) and the International Folklore Festival (1962), which are still alive, developing the oldest Heptanisian tradition. These institutions have been embraced from the local society. Theatre, music, paintings and photos exhibitions, conferences, nights of poetry, concerts, ballet, serenades, varkarolas, chorus nights, combine every summer and strengthen the cultural tradition of Lefkada. In August, the streets are full of dancers from all over the world, dancing and singing in the central market of the town. The festivals offer to the audience, unforgettable memories. One of the most breathtaking had been the time that the great Maria Kallas, had performed in 1964.
MUNICIPALITY OF KARYA
The lentil festival in Aghios Donatos: In the church of Aghios Donatos, on the 7th of August, the well known festival, takes place. The housewives of the village cook in a traditional way the lentils of Englouvi, in huge pots and serve the guest together with olives and salted sardines. The representation of the Lefkaditian traditional wedding: The Lefkaditian wedding comes alive following all stages: match making, hair, yeasts, wedding ceremony, beds, and feast.
The festival of Riganada: It has been taking place since 1983 in the main square. Riganada is served to the people, a snack but very delicious and aromatic food. It’s wet traditional bread from the village with oil, salt and oregano.
MUNICIPALITY OF SFAKIOTES
Festivals of wines: have been taking place since 1983, every August in the main square of Frya with the homonym historic well. The festivals are offering nights of folklore, demotic music, dance and exhibitions of local traditional products and folklore handicraft
Ta Ai Gianniou ta Lamparda: The festival has been taking place every year on the 24th of June in Pinakochori village. The festival presents customs, folklore and demotic music.
MUNICIPALITY OF MEGANISSI
The feast of sardine: Organised at the end of July, in the square of Vathi, with a traditional orchestra, roasted fishes, mainly sardines and plenty of local wine.
Chess night: Organised at the beginning of August in Katomeri- in the main square or in Spartochori, former building of KEFO, with the participation of one chess expert.
